Pulled pork, real old-fashioned pulled pork. Just like grandma used to make it. At least my grandmother could make the best pulled pork, so fantastically delicious! Unfortunately I was never able to ask her the recipe, but after much practice this recipe comes very close. It is delicious, tender, fantastically tasty, slowly cooked stew meat.

Making pulled pork is not difficult at all. You don't need many ingredients for it either, just a kilo of rib roasts and some seasonings such as onion, bay leaf, cloves and of course a slice of gingerbread. Believe me, this should not be missing from a good recipe for pulled pork πŸ˜‰ . You can also use lean rib steaks, but I prefer to use fatty meat. You are of course going to stew the meat for a long time and you want tender pulled pork as a result, then fatty meat such as ribs is tastiest.

Make your own pulled pork

Besides a handful of ingredients, all you need is some love and patience. Pulled pork is stew meat and it simply needs time to stew properly. Furthermore, it does not require much work and is therefore an ideal dish to make if you are at home all day, such as during the weekend or now because you may be working from home due to the Corona virus. You can serve pulled pork with boiled potatoes and red cabbage, for example, or use it in thiscasserole with red cabbage, also very tasty.

Easy recipe for old-fashioned pulled pork (like Grandma used to make it)

What you need (ingredients):

  • 750 gram the rib patch
  • 300 ml water
  • 2 onions (shredded)
  • 2 slices gingerbread
  • 1Β½ beef bouillon cube
  • 4 bay leaves
  • 3 cloves
  • 4 tablespoons vinegar
  • butter
  • paprika powder, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper


HOW TO MAKE IT (preparation method):

  • About half an hour before you start, remove the meat from the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature.

  • Sprinkle salt, pepper, paprika powder and cayenne pepper (to taste) on both sides of the rib steaks.

  • Put plenty of butter in a frying pan and fry the meat alternately for a few minutes until it is golden brown. Remove the meat from the pan and set it aside on a plate.

  • Fry the onions briefly in the frying pan and add a little extra butter if necessary.

  • When the onion starts to become translucent, add 300 ml water, 1Β½ beef stock cubes, 4 tbsp vinegar, 4 bay leaves and 3 cloves.

  • Bring all this to the boil while stirring slowly and when it boils, add the meat. Place the gingerbread slices on top. Bring everything back to the boil, put the lid on the pan and turn the heat down.

  • Let this stand for at least 3/4 hours (check occasionally, turn meat and if it becomes dry you can add some water). If you have the time, let it rise longer, the longer the tastier the meat becomes. About 6 hours is a good starting point. If you want to serve it and there is still too much liquid in the pan, remove the lid and let it reduce. Enjoy your meal!

        It certainly looks like pickled meat, except that it has not been in the pickle. That's why it doesn't need syrup. Made it yesterday and ate it today with my 89-year-old mother-in-law. Delicious, with fries and applesauce, everything home-made.

        Yesterday I made it according to the recipe for the first time... to eat your fingers. I think the recipes excel (I have only just started cooking) because you use ingredients/herbs that you have more or less standard at home. You don't have to buy a jar with a difficult name of which you only need 1 teaspoon and nothing else for years! Kudos!!
        Bought too much meat so made a new pan today...
        I've added some stuff now... sweet bell pepper, pieces of carrot, garlic/red pepper and one scoop of apple syrup… partly replace the water with red wine and red wine vinegar….

    I have tried so many stew dishes, but I always went back to packets and bags because I didn't like them that much.
    But this dish is so fantastic that I will never try a packet or bag (or other stew) again.
    The only downside is that my pan is really too small, so I just ordered a new one right away.

    Made for the second time and is now simmering. I let it simmer for a very long time, 8 hours or more.
    Always leave it for at least 1 day, otherwise use red wine instead of vinegar. The first time it was a relief. I wonder if that is also the case now.

      What a shame to read. That could be for a number of reasons, but if the only thing you changed was the meat then I think that's it. Maybe next time just ask for slightly fattier pieces - then you shouldn't go wrong.

    What a great recipe, it deserves a big 9. πŸ‘I made it in the slow cooker, and it simmered quietly for 3 days, until it indeed became real pulled pork. I didn't have any gingerbread, but as an alternative I used a small handful of gingerbread. I think it will taste even better with gingerbread. In any case, I will include this in my regular repertoire. Thanks for sharing this delicious recipe!

    Thanks for this delicious recipe!
    Our grandsons aged 12 and 14 came to stay. We have an app with them that the eldest gave the name Pulled Meat (just googled it and he thought this name was funny...) But..., they had never eaten pulled pork before!
    So I thought it would be fun to prepare that. Well, I knew that! They licked their fingers, the combination with fries and peas (from our allotment garden, from the freezer) was a success!! And not only with them, but we (grandfather and grandmother) and our daughter and son-in-law also loved it!
    I let the ribs stew for at least 5 hours, the meat did indeed fall apart like soft threads. So worth repeating!

      Hi Judith, the meat will not necessarily decrease, but it will change in structure somewhat and may appear less than the raw amount. The desired portion per person will also differ, you can freeze it well, so you could choose to make extra next time just to be on the safe side!

    Made in the slow cooker (low 8 hours). Replace gingerbread with gingerbread. Instead of of cayenne pepper, paprika powder spicy used.
